    An Efficiency-Focused Design of Direct-DC Loads in Buildings

    Despite the recent interest in direct current (DC) power distribution in buildings, the market for DC-ready loads remains small. The existing DC loads in various products or research test beds are not always designed to efficiently leverage the benefits of DC. This work addresses a pressing need for a study into the development of efficient DC loads. In particular, it focuses on documenting and demonstrating how to best leverage a DC input to eliminate or improve conversion stages in a load’s power converter. This work identifies how typical building loads can benefit from DC input, including bath fans, refrigerators, task lights, and zone lighting. It then details the development of several prototypes that demonstrate efficiency savings with DC. The most efficient direct-DC loads are explicitly designed for DC from the ground up, rather than from an AC modification

    Higher-Order Memory Schema and Conscious Experience

    In the interesting and thought-provoking article Grazziano and colleagues argue for their Attention Schema Theory (AST) of consciousness. They present AST as a unification of Global Workspace Theory (GWT), Illusionism, and the Higher-Order Thought (HOT) theory. We argue it is a mistake to equate 'subjective experience,' ad related terms, with dualism. They simply denote experience. Also, as presented, AST does not accurately capture the essence of HOT for two reasons. HOT is presented as a version of strong illusionism, which it isn't, and HOT requires that one be aware of one's mental life, and postulates that his consists in a re-representation of what is occurring at at the lower-order levels. However, the authors deny that AST involves re-representing visual stimuli. We close by proposing an alternative unification: GWT and AST provide crucial accounts of how lower-order states are assembled and maintained, but higher-order theory provides the account of subjective experience

    A comprehensive investigation into the hydrodynamic and capture/retention performance of a gross pollutant trap

    A novel and comprehensive testing approach to examine the performance of gross pollutant traps (GPTs) was developed. A proprietary GPT with internal screens for capturing gross pollutants—organic matter and anthropogenic litter—was used as a case study. This work is the first investigation of its kind and provides valuable practical information for the design, selection and operation of GPTs and also the management of street waste in an urban environment. It used a combination of physical and theoretical models to examine in detail the hydrodynamic and capture/retention characteristics of the GPT. The results showed that the GPT operated efficiently until at least 68% of the screens were blocked, particularly at high flow rates. At lower flow rates, the high capture/retention performance trend was reversed. It was also found that a raised inlet GPT offered a better capture/retention performance. This finding indicates that cleaning operations could be more effectively planned in conjunction with the deterioration in GPT’s capture/retention performance

    Vertical-axis wind turbines in oblique flow: sensitivity to rotor geometry

    Increasing interest is being shown worldwide in the application of vertical-axis wind turbines for decentralised electricity generation within cities. The distortion of the onset air flow by buildings within the urban environment might however, under certain conditions of wind speed or direction, cause vertical-axis wind turbines to operate in oblique flow – in other words in conditions in which the wind vector is non-perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the turbine. Little is known about the effect on the operation of a vertical-axis wind turbine when the wind is perturbed from supposedly optimal conditions. In the present study, the Vorticity Transport Model has been used to simulate the aerodynamic performance and wake dynamics, both in normal and in oblique flow, of three different vertical-axis wind turbines: one with a straight-bladed configuration, another with a curved-bladed configuration and another with a helically twisted configuration. The results partly confirm previous experimental measurements that suggest that a straight-bladed vertical-axis wind turbine that operates in oblique flow might produce a higher power coefficient compared to when it is operated in normal flow. The simulations suggest, however, that significantly higher power coefficients in oblique flow are obtained only at higher tip speed ratios, and indeed only if the height of the turbine is not large compared to its radius. Furthermore, it is shown that a vertical-axis wind turbine with blades that are helically twisted around its rotational axis produces a relatively steady power coefficient in both normal and oblique flow when compared to that produced by turbines with either a straight- or a curved-bladed configuration
